Butterfly Host Plant

Richmond Birdwing Vine

(Pararistolochia praevenosa)

A beautiful, large colourful Butterfly with gliding flight. Classified as vulnerable by Qld Govt. Male is bright metallic green and black and distinctively patterned underwings and the female has brown markings.

The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is one of Australia’s most impressive and beautiful native butterflies, but unfortunately it is under threat of extinction. Land clearing changes to horticultural and agricultural practices and even the way we garden has brought about the threat of its demise.

They have lost their breeding habitat as well as having only one food plant for the caterpillars, and these are being lost along with the bushland .As gardeners we can ensure its survival by growing this plant.

Occurs in coastal and hinterland rainforests on volcanic soils. Planting this vine can help restore this rare and endangered Butterfly.
